Network effects on standard software markets: a simulation model to examine pricing strategies

چکیده

This paper examines strategies of standard software vendors, in view of the existence of network effects on standard software markets. In particular, we analyze if and under which conditions penetration pricing can be considered as a promising strategy. Our work is based on a simulation model, which provides the opportunity to examine the impact of alternative pricing strategies on the distribution of software systems. Furthermore, the paper provides some empirical results from the perspective of the users. 1 Prof. Dr. Peter Buxmann, Freiberg University of Technology, Chair of Information Management, Lessingstr. 45, 09596 Fre iberg, Germany, [email protected] Network Effects on Standard Software Markets Page 2

Essays on Network Effects

Many industries characterize the "network externalities" or "network effects," which highlight that the benefit that a consumer derives from the use of a good often depends on the number of other consumers purchasing compatible items. The four essays in this dissertation examine some important issues in industries in the presence of network effects. In the first essay, the influence of network ...

Understanding Network Effects in Software Markets: Evidence from Web Server Pricing

Prior theoretical research has established that many software products are subject to network effects and exhibit the characteristics of two-sided markets. However, despite the importance of the software industry to the world economy, few studies have attempted to empirically examine these characteristics, or several others which theory suggests impact software price. This study develops and te...

A DSS-Based Dynamic Programming for Finding Optimal Markets Using Neural Networks and Pricing

One of the substantial challenges in marketing efforts is determining optimal markets, specifically in market segmentation. The problem is more controversial in electronic commerce and electronic marketing. Consumer behaviour is influenced by different factors and thus varies in different time periods. These dynamic impacts lead to the uncertain behaviour of consumers and therefore harden the t...

Pricing and Upgrade Strategies for Software Vendors in the Software-as-a-Service Market

This study examines the competition between an independent software vendor (ISV) who offers a standard fixed-price software product and a cloud software vendor (CSV) who adopts a usage-based linear pricing scheme for its cloud-based software. Using a game theoretic approach, we set up a duopoly model to derive the optimal pricing and product feature choice decisions for both the ISV and the CSV...

Modelling the Heterogeneous Price Setting Behavior of Firms (DSGE Approach)

Despite the empirical evidence of the difference in the degree of price stickiness of goods and services, in the new standard Keynesian models, the same price stickiness is considered for all firms producing intermediate goods. In recent years, a new generation of pricing models has been introduced to simulate the heterogeneous price setting behavior in which, unlike standard pricing models, th...
